Seminar 07

Seminar: 07 (2022-2024)

Title: Preservation of Less-Resourced Dialect

Coordinator: Dr. Biswanath Dutta

Speaker: Soumyakanta Barik

Abstract

Language is a form of communication and more importantly a carrier of knowledge. In an implicit way the rooted knowledge and wisdom is transferred from one generation to the other. But languages die if not given attention. Less popular dialects (language varieties) are overshadowed by more resourceful and popular languages. But due to political, financial, and a sense of pride involved in a particular language, the dialectical speaker tends to speak not their mother tongue but which is considered and believed to be the superset of that language.

Tulu, Boro, Khasi, Sambalpuri etc are that kind of a language. These languages are very exotic and when we do the linguistic analysis of the language we find many interesting phenomena. These languages are very sweet to listen to and are highly expressive.

The seminar would primarily be dealing with the preservation and documentation aspects of any dialect in the world taking different dialects as examples.
