Abstract:
Information and Communication Technology has been successfully and widely adapted for Education. The availability of the necessary tools and also widespread awareness of the potential of such technology has resulted in a spurt of activities especially in the area of elearning. The main features that have made elearning popular are modularity and versatility of the systems, online availability of resources, user curiosity and awareness, ease of use of tools and off course the open source movement that lends valuable tools are no cost or low costs. The paper defined e-learning while discussing the pedagogical issues in elearning. It discuses the features of e-learning tools and presents a few open source tools. Some issues related to elearning such as Learning Objects metadata and resource discovery are also discussed.
