The Dissertation report entitled “BUILDING DIGITAL REPOSITORY OF PATIENT RECORDS USING DSPACE”, which is being submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the M.S. (Library & Information Science) Programme of the Indian Statistical Institute, is the result of the work carried out by me under the guidance and supervision of Dr. K.S Raghavan, Professor, DRTC, Indian Statistical Institute. In this dissertation the primary objective was to create a digital repository of patient records. The data in question in this particular project is what is available and maintained in records of patients (patient case sheets) in a large hospital. Each record contained data on different attributes and, understandably, these differ from attributes used in conventional library and bibliographic information systems (such as, Title, Author, Subject etc.). The aim of this project is to build a searchable digital repository of data to enhance search efficiency. The patient records have been maintained as a repository in a database using PostgreSQL and Dspace which meet all the desired functions, has been used for user interface and searching. The Lucene search engine and jsp and xml based user interface have been employed to allow for easy interaction by users (Doctors). The original patient records were available in a CDS/ISIS database. There are many advantages of storing patient records as a digital repository. Digital repositories on the Web

1)Provide a time and place independent information service to the user.

2)Are more than just a collection of hyperlinks on a web site; They form a comprehensive storehouse of data that can be indexed and searched, all in one place.

3)Are able to integrate freely available information on the web.

4)Support preservation and archiving of scanned images, health records, documents, X-rays, CT Scan reports , videos, etc in various file formats over a long time.

Dspace is a digital library software which offers several features. It is suitable for such exercises as the one attempted in this project. It is a fairly sophisticated system with not only the basic components for building repository but also with efficient user interface for navigation, browsing and searching (Lucene search engine). Another principal feature is that it is an open source software and customizable, and gives long time preservation facility.

    Future Research

A patient record is a complex information resource with data on an extremely wide range of parameters - medicines and treatment administered, after effects, etc. As such it provides valuable information to healthcare personnel in decision-making. It is however, very important to ensure that a properly and well-conceived system is designed which takes into consideration both the complexities of the patient record as also the possible approaches of healthcare personnel who seek information stored in these records. A digital repository offers a comprehensive solution and addresses many of the issues encountered. First of all they are useful as stores of valuable records and data and could be seen as means for preservation of such data and records over time. Secondly, digital repositories can be made accessible from remote locations and on a 24x7 basis. An issue that needs to be examined in greater detail and more thoroughly in employing such technologies for exercises such as the one described in this project relates to their search capabilities. Surely in a specialized domain as health care it is essential to employ complex and elaborate vocabularies to support search and retrieval. It is important therefore to undertake further work to assess possibilities in this direction. In recent years it has been often emphasized that Ontologies have a significant role to play in information retrieval. The feasibility of interfacing Ontologies into the search process in such digital repositories is another issue that needs to be looked at in greater detail.
