Seminar 11

Title - The Twin Peaks of Interoperability and Generativity

Speaker: Shakeeb Arzoo

Abstract

Interoperability sounds like a technical concept. But when we delve into the concept of interoperability, we will see it is very universal like the idea of gravity or the flow of energy. Similar to any other great idea, interoperability has profound depths and is in fact, composed of several layers, entailing different types of interconnections and linkages. It is hardly an exaggeration to say that without the invisible working of interoperability, most modern systems whether financial or social, or educational would cease to function.

On the other hand, the concept of Generativity has not gained as much currency. The idea comes from the field of Psychology, but it will be seen that is thematically and conceptually similar to Interoperability. Generative systems have not only made the current technological boom possible but it has also been at the core of many successful systems, whether physical or digital.

This presentation concentrates on some of the facets of both concepts, as to what generative systems mean, how it complements interoperable systems, and how libraries (which have always been at the back end of generative ideas) have played a role in it. Finally, it will attempt to elucidate some of its associated risks before suggesting a cautious roadmap for the future.
