Prof. S. R. Ranganathan, the doyen of library and information science had a huge role establishing the field of librarianship as a discipline of study and research namely Library and Information Sciences (LIS). He has contributed immensely to different aspects of the discipline. His theories and principles have impacted several developments in information organization, practices, policies and infrastructure. With the logical progression from books in the library to resources on the web, his principled approach is being applied to address challenges pertaining to web organization and retrieval.

The discipline of LIS has progressed rapidly especially with the deployment of technology for library management and services. Technology impacts libraries and their services directly because in the digital era, users of libraries have many expectations of technology driven innovative services. Librarians, information scientists, computer science experts and other professionals have collaborated to improve storage, retrieval and preservation of resources on web. Hence, research in LIS has expanded the purview of the discipline from dealing with just books to offering knowledge based services. Library and Information science field is one of the first to explore cutting edge technologies and techniques from advanced areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing, Information Retrieval, Semantic Web and Data and Text mining, Data Science.
