Seminar 3

Topic: The OAIS Model: A Panacea for Managing Digital Preservation

Presentation by: Harikrishnan J S

Abstract

Just like physical objects, digital objects need to be preserved so that future generations can have access to them and extract their worth at a later time. In this context, Digital Preservation has emerged as a key issue for archives, libraries and other institutions. The OAIS Reference Model has become a de facto standard for making and building digital archives. Although there are no fool-proof solutions, this presentation seeks to introduce some of the key issues associated with Digital Preservation from the perspective of the OAIS Model.

In this presentation, we will learn why digital objects need preservation, what digital preservation is, the challenges in digital preservation, especially in the aspect of management, the importance of metadata in preservation and access of preserved objects, and understand the OAIS model and its role in preservation with a case study on Central Laboratory for the Research Councils (CCLRC).

All are cordially invited to attend the seminar.
